By invoking prostitution,CPM MP Anil Basu has offended not just the Trinamool Congress but sex workers too. Women of Sonagachi,Kolkatas red-light area, have taken out protest rallies, burnt an effigy of the Chief Minister and sent an open letter to the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court seeking action against the MP.
Questioning the source of Mamata Banerjees funds,Basu had said that sex workers in Sonagachi do not even look at smaller clients when they get a big client and added that the Trinamool has found a big client,a reference to the US.
Each of us has an identity as a woman. Basu has shown he has no respect for any woman, said a sex worker at a rally, demanding his expulsion.
Lawyer Krishnendu Bhattacharya, representing the group who wrote the open letter to the Calcutta CJ,said a similar letter will be sent to the CJI. If no action is taken against Basu,we will consider filing a PIL, he said.
Sonagachi has 10,000 sex workers,7,000 of them voters of Shyampukur constituency. An NGO representing them has put up a charter of demands and said they will not vote for any candidate who does not endorse these.
