Six of the countrys top sportspersons were named as the brand ambassadors of the Commonwealth Games. Shooter Abhinav Bindra, shuttler Saina Nehwal, boxers Vijender Singh,MC Mary Kom,shooter Samaresh, wrestler Sushil Kumar will be face of the mega event.
These champions have done India proud with their achievements and will serve as remarkable Brand Ambassadors for the Games, Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi said at the inaugurations of the events main venue Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
It ties up with the ideals of the Organising Committee and I am sure these champions will inspire Indians to back the Commonwealth Games and take to Olympic sport, he added.
Vijender was elated by the honour. I feel blessed and privileged to be in this list, the 24-year-old world number one middleweight boxer said. The last time I competed in the CWG,I got a silver, this time I am going to get a gold, he added.
The Haryana boxer was among the athletes who received the Queens Baton Relay at the Buckingham Palace in London and was also there when it touched India last month.
Mary Kom,on the other hand, was surprised to get the news. The diminutive boxer was,in fact, participating in the Queens Baton relay in Imphal when she first got this news.
Frankly,I am a bit shocked. Womens boxing is not in CWG still I have been chosen to be a brand ambassador. I feel honoured. I hope womens boxing is made a part of CWG in the future, the 27-year-old mother of two said.
