Similar on the lines of the West Bengal model, renowned environmentalist Dr R K Pachauri is all set to prepare a report on climate change impact model for the state. Having got a green signal from Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, the model will help assess extreme events for the state like during the Mumbai floods in 2005.
Speaking on the sidelines of a talk on climate change and construction industry hosted by Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association of India (CREDAI) in Pune, Pachauri said the report will be readied in a year's time.
Similar reports are being readied by The Energy and Research Institute (TERI), of which Pachauri is the director general, for Rajasthan and Gujarat as well.
"There will be a detailed project considering all the regions of the state including the coastal belt and the drought prone areas of the state. The report will assess all the factors in a special readied model,'' said Pachauri.
Pachauri was also all praise for Pune builders who have listed 20 city projects out of the 160 projects in the country under the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA).
Speaking on the challenges, opportunities and imperatives for the real estate sector in India, Pachauri called for energy security measures by the government. "It is a myth that India is self sufficient in coal,'' he said while warning the government on the impending crisis of energy security.
He further added that by 2031-32, India would be forced to import 750 billion tonnes of coal while he also warned about temperatures rising by 1.1 degree celsius to 6.4 degree celsius. Orientation of the buildings to adapt to these changes is the need of the hour and adaptation to these changes than just mitigation is the answer he said calling the building fraternity to take heed to these changes.
