Justice Liberhan has delivered only two real surprises in his report. It is also entirely understandable why only one has been taken note of in political debate. That, indeed, is his repeated censure of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. But the other real surprise, in fact even bigger and more significant than the somewhat gratuitous indictment of Vajpayee, has gone unnoticed — and that is entirely understandable too. In fact, the Liberhan Commission’s total exoneration of Narasimha Rao has left the BJP cold, the left-secular intelligentsia stunned, and the Congress confused.

You can understand why the BJP does not care. You can also understand the indifference of the left-secular intelligentsia, because they had always led the canard that Rao was somehow complicit in that crime, that he was a closet Jan Sanghi. Pull down his dhoti, and you will find a pair of khaki shorts, they would say. But why is the Congress silent and unwilling to even acknowledge with a sense of vindication if not joy that they, their government and their prime minister were not to blame, and have been unfairly pilloried and punished for a crime Justice Liberhan says they never committed? That’s because the commission destroys the canard they themselves have built against their own party. They did it not because they really believed Rao was a bigot and complicit in the destruction. Most of them (remember the ones who broke away from the party in the name of genuine secularism then?) saw it as a great excuse to pressure the then hands-off Sonia Gandhi to bless an insiders’ coup, and replace Rao, preferably with Arjun Singh. Rao survived many internal coup attempts, but never recovered from the damage. In 1998, Sitaram Kesri even denied him a ticket to contest for the Lok Sabha.

    ... contd.

Liberhan's CredibilityBy: shiney | 16-Dec-2009 Reply | Forward Not sure why there is so much hue and cry on a silly report which 15/16 years after the incident and after he spent a bomb on preparing this stupid report. But thanks for pointing out injustice done by Congress to PVNR, but rest assured the same thing will happen to MMS once he retires even though a Babri isnt there in his track record. Congress is a family party and memorials along Yamuna is reserved for Gandhi (fake) family descendents. PVNR was the best PM material that Congress has given this country and its wonderful he didnt ask soldiers to shoot innocent people and play into the hands of opposition. Pls give him the credit that while he has been discredited he has borne it with dignity and maturity and he will always be the architech of India's economic reforms, people like Arjun Singh and Sitaram Kesri will be remembered for making every effort to take this country backwards.
Rao-was he the passive culprit?By: mussusuti | 09-Dec-2009 Reply | Forward It appears that he is chargeable as the abetter. But he was holding a constitutional post and acted within the constraints laid in the constitution and the sarkaria committee observations hindered the freedom to invoke article 356 of our constitution. Moreover, his attempts to step in as receiver of the disputed structure(property) was thwarted by the courts in good faith. The apex court in turn was made to beleive that nothing undesirable will happen and abundant measures are taken to proect the disputed site and structure by the then UP CM. Moreover, the governor of UP at that time was also reported too have opined that everything was normal at the time of sending his report in the night of 1sr Dec,92. So based on the supreme court'smoves to appoint it's own observer to monitor and report on the hourly happenings and governor's report, central government cannot do much. Had the Prez rule imposed- criticism. So PV has acted wisely, and UP CMfailed to protect the site nd his word
What about Sonia !By: Rahul Shah | 30-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Hi SG. As usual your articel was clear and incisive. However, I wanted to add to your closing remarks. While PVNR certainly deserves credit for identfying the talents of MMS - What about Sonia? Does she not deserve credit for placing he faith in him and giving him independence to act? I think that act too deserves some credit. Thanks
MMS without PVN's BackingBy: shiney | 16-Dec-2009 Reply | Forward sure it does, but if PVN had not brought in MMS, where would have Sonia found him? If PVN hadnt given MMS the independence to do the right thing, how does it matter whether Sonia found MMS 5 years later or didnt find. The 5yrs of PVN was some of the most crucial years in India's history. Anyway he will not get any memorial, as all memorials along Yamuna are meant for Nehru-Gandhi dynasty alone.
PVN Rao 1994-95: Chankaya's big miscalculationBy: Nitin Mathur | 29-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward It will not be fair to however share one more aspect associated to Rao sahab. After the demolition the frenzy of the temple got down as BJP's and RSS's stands got cornered in legal tangles associated with non-honouring of Court directives and its own affidavits to SC and NIC. Chanakya's inaction had taken sting out of Temple movement. Now Rao's real threat was from Advani, Arjun Singh and Sitaram Kesri. The big move which Rao Okeyed in 1994-95 was the step taken to implicate Advani & other leaders in the Jain Hawala trial. As a lawyer Rao's big mistake was in assessing that the court would accept Jain Diary notings as evidence enough to hold persons guilty. Unfortunately his calculation misfired. The diary entries which also had Congress leaders initials ensured the Congress leaders were also tried. This left the Congress fragmented. A scholar of Rao's stature was denied ticket by a mere donation-collector cum treasurer Sitaram kesri. Congress then cut a sorry figure and so did Rao
Monopolized politics.By: DR.PETROL PUMOP CHOR | 29-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Sir, if it is true that Narasimha Rao wore a khakhi nicker under his dhoti, then it is very clear that our politics are monopolized. The people of India do not have their say or why else has no one taken the liberty to take to task the criminals from the political class?
