Telangana ideologue Jayashankar passes away

Telangana ideologue and revolutionary writer Prof Dr Kothapalli Jayashankar died on Tuesday after a prolonged illness.

Telangana ideologue and revolutionary writer Prof Dr Kothapalli Jayashankar died on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. He was 76 and had been suffering from cancer for the last two years. The driving force of the Telangana movement for over five decades,Prof Jayashankar breathed his last at his ancestral home at Hanamkonda near Warangal.

The former vice-chancellor of Kakatiya University was mostly bed-ridden and had moved his home from Hyderabad to Hanamkonda after his health deteriorated.

He joined the movement for a separate Telangana state in 1952,when he was a student leader. He had led several agitations since 1962,transforming it into a mass movement. Since 1980,he had been writing on the plight of people in Telangana,pointing out “injustices” by successive governments,“disparity in employment and education”,and what he called “domination of Andhra leaders” over the region.

His articles on “unequal distribution of water resources” between Telangana,Andhra and Rayalaseema have become reference texts for pro-Telangana debates.

He was the guiding force for Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS). He was also the political mentor of TRS president K Chandrasekhara Rao.
