Its one of the most popular Christmas stories of all times. A young girl,Clara, receives a unique Christmas present from her godfather a wooden nutcracker, carved in the shape of a little man, used for cracking hazelnuts. This transports her into a fantasy world where all her toys, including the nutcracker, come alive, and Clara saves them from the evil Mouse King.
This simple tale has been narrated innumerable times,in the form of cartoons, stage plays and an animated version (Barbie in the Nutcracker),but its most popular rendition remains the ballet with a music score by Tchaikovsky and choreography by George Blanchene. In Delhi, the ballet was staged by the India Fernando Ballet Company (IFBC) on Tuesday night at Siri Fort auditorium.
While founder of the company,Fernando Aguilera, played the role of the Nutcracker,Clara was played by Maria Fernanda Blanco.
If Act One had the audience witness a battle between gingerbread soldiers and the Mouse King,in Act Two they participated in the Christmas festivities at Clares house. Making the performances more impactful was the projection on the gigantic screens in the backdrop. So after winning the battle against the Mouse King,Clare and the Nutcracker travelled to the Land of Sweets in Confiturembourg, ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy. The highlight was the Waltz of the Snowflakes, where young ballerinas danced in white tutus.
Mohd Rafi, producer of the show and founder of IFBC,said IFBC has come a long way since Fernando came to India in 1996. We also performed at KP Singhs birthday party in Udaipur.
