  • You’d be surprised to realise how it is much more likely you would get away with saying something entirely facetious and silly, but get into trouble when you try making a serious, sincere point. That, at least, has been the story of my life. At a series of public functions in Pakistan several years ago, I said Pakistan was in many ways as imperfect a dictatorship as India was an imperfect democracy: the central argument being that just as India had not been able to accord all its citizens all the freedoms that a democracy of this quality should have, Pakistan had not quite been able to deny their people all the freedoms that a classical dictatorship should have. That is why a reasonably free media functioned even under Musharraf, an Indian editor was able to say rude things at the launch of a newspaper (by now the widely respected Daily Times) and there was a reasonably independent judiciary; not the kind of things you would see in Saddam’s Iraq, Ahmedinejad’s Iran, or even China and Saudi Arabia.

It instantly got me in trouble. The NDA was in power then and the attack came from saffron blogs and pro-BJP columnists on well-known websites. It was as if this Indian editor had gone to Pakistan and given his country a bad name by finding faults with its democracy and merits in Pakistan’s dictatorship. What is happening right now, after the terror attacks, and particularly in Mumbai and among our upper classes has to be seen in that context.

    ... contd.

What makes the voters to opt for the '49 o'?By: VYSHNAVINEELAKANTAPILLAI | 04-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward the reason why most of the voters opt for "49 O" is the dirty politicians who are found in our society. the citizens of today are highly aware of their voting right. it is the first and foremost duty.if politicians are really clean why should the citizens opt for it? i would always support the view that "49 O" because it enhances the citizen to enhance its right at the same time it also helps him to show his anger towards the candidate whom he trusted that he would do allot in the previous election. right now most of the candidates think that the voters are use and throw type. they just use them during elections and throw them when the candidate wins the election. i am not blaming the entire candidate who contest the election but there are exceptions too. so this '49 o' helps the candidate to show his anger and frustration and to teach a lesson.it is hard to find a clean candidate now that is why we need 49 o..
49-OBy: Sanjay Ranade | 31-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward 49-O is of course not part of the Constitution of India. It is part of the Conduct of Election Rules 1961. It reads - 49-O. Elector deciding not to vote. -If an elector, after his electoral roll number has been duly entered in the register of voters in Form-17A and has put his signature or thumb impression thereon as Require under sub-rule (1) of rule 49L, decided not to record his vote, a remark to this effect shall be made against the said entry in Form 17A by the presiding officer and the signature or thumb impression of the elector shall be obtained against such remark....….However, even if the 'no votes' are more than the 'winning' votes, it does not make any difference on the election result.

I am not sure how these could be taken forward.Nominate a nuetral/non political committee for:1. Every Minister- state or central should be given a objective or a task cut out for 6 months to 1 year. If he achieves he stays or else he is kicked out.2. Corruption is rampant. Stop bribing.3. Respect our armed forces
