Even the gods were taken by a surprise on Sunday night when thieves made a run with the money offered at a gurdwara and a temple which are situated adjacent to each other in Sector 7-C .
The thieves decamped with all the cash stored in vaults of the two religious buildings on the intervening night of November 15 and 16.
After removing the bolts from the doors with a finesse, the burglars struck at the two buildings sometime between 12 am and 3 am, breaking open the front doors of the gurdwara and Sanatan Dharam Mandir and taking away the cash.
The people who were the first to notice the incident said the same thieves had committed the burglary since the shoe-prints in the both the buildings matched.
The incident came to light when the caretaker of Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha found the front door of the gurdwara broken around 4 am and raised the alarm. The other workers and granthis took guard to apprehend the thieves but later discovered that the thieves had fled from the back door.
Baldev Singh, vice-president of the gurdwara committee, said the thieves had broken the front door and entered. Since the safe was heavy, they broke it open to steal the money and then made their way out from the back door. Baldev reported to the police that though the amount kept in the safe was not calculated, it was around Rs 25,000. According to him, the safe is opened at the end of the month to take out the money. On the other hand, members of the Sanatan Dharam Triveni Mandir management also reported to the police that thieves had struck at the temple and decamped with the cash kept in its two safe boxes.
