The Supreme Court on Monday said that those burning women to death for dowry should be hanged and no mercy shown to them.

"You have burnt to death a woman by pouring kerosene.

How can you do such a barbaric act? It is an uncivilised act.

You should be hanged for the crime, " a vacation bench of Justices Markandeya Katju and Deepak Verma observed.

The apex court lamented that in India, there has been a spurt in the number of dowry cases in which hapless women are burnt to death by the husband and the in-laws.

"In India hundreds of innocent women are being burnt to death. It is an uncivilised act, How can we do it? We should hang such persons, " the apex court observed.

The apex court passed the observation while refusing to grant bail to Mahender Kumar Gulati, a convict in a bride burning case.

We will not grant you any relief. You can try your luck before another bench," the apex court told counsel Jasbir Singh Malik.

In this case, the deceased Rajani in her dying declaration had accused her husband Mahender Kumar Gulati, his elder brother Prem Kumar Gulati and the latter's wife Rajani of constantly harassing her and then setting her ablaze after pouring kerosene over her at their house in Haryana's Bhiwani district.

A great step towards humanityBy: Prem Nizar Hameed | 03-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward Yes, I fully agree with the capital punishment here, even though it was the system of the medieval age. If people become so barbaric, they have to be dealt with such systems only.I am not a Mao to prescribe the revolution should come through the barrels of gun, even though my blood is boiling. I appeal the law makers to come forth to save my sisters from these types of fanatics and barbarians. Fast track court should send them straightaway to the gallows. Our technology is so advanced that even the Sun God does not know when our missiles reach his proximity. But the saus-bahu syndrome and the dowry system have no solutions yet. How can we claim that we are in the booming when such incidents make blot on our conscience? Laws are there, but we lack determination for properly implementing them.

They should be punished the way , they did it. Yes they should be burnt alive in public so that people how are planning to commit such crime in future get to see, the Pain and agony and their soul are horrified just by imagining the thought of it.

Men, please don't marry a girl, if you can't protect her...By: Diana Ann Isaac | 03-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward Each and every death of young brides have to be thoroughly investigated before being declared as a suicide case.If possible, we have to reopen all those cases in the recent past , say in past two years,which have been closed making mockery of the judiciary.Punishments have to be made strictly and impartially. It should prevent others to deter from some heinous acts in future.At the same time , our young girls are to be empowered so that they would escape such a tragic fate.Husband of the brides who have been killed on account of domestic abuse should not be allowed to remarry, say for a cap of 7 years or so and should be stripped of their jobs and all governement privileges for some years.Only if the court is satisfied that he has regretted for his past deeds, he should be allowed to continue as a normal citizen.
