The police found the ATM at Pawars home. The machine was intact with Rs 8.4 lakh inside, said Shahjahanpur Circle Officer Rajesh Kumar. The incident took place when there was no security guard manning the ATM booth the guard had left for home,as he was not feeling well.
According to the police, around 3 am,four men arrived at the ATM in a mini-truck and tried to pull it out of the booth. When guards at another ATM nearby objected, they were threatened with pistols and beaten up.
At gunpoint, they forced the guards Nanhe and Vinod Kumar to help them take out the machine and load it on the truck, said Kumar. After the men drove away with the ATM,the guards informed the police. In the CCTV footage,we identified one of the man as Sandeep Pawar, said an officer. The police arrested him from his residence. He spilled the beans during questioning.
Pawar was arrested last year in a case of smuggling drugs and was recently released on bail, said an officer. He has told the police that he and his associates had no idea that a CCTV was recording their every movement.
