The security situation of Jammu and Kashmir is not yet conducive for moving the Army out of the state, said Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Jammu on Tuesday, pointing out that demilitarisation will take time.

The Chief Minister was speaking on the occasion of the dedication of a war memorial to the nation in Jammu. The war memorial, Balidan Sthambh, was dedicated by Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor and accepted by the Chief Minister on behalf of the people of the state.

Omar said that “although the Army’s primary task was to take care of the border and the Line of Control (LoC), it has been in Jammu and Kashmir for the past 21 years on account of the internal situation of the state arising out of the prevailing militancy in the state”.

Omar said that during the past 21 years, the Army has helped the state in many ways, not just in maintaining security and law and order. “The Army has always been with the people in any kind of major crisis arising out of natural calamities and disasters or any other eventuality.”

“Although the Army may also be willing to go back to its primary task of managing and protecting country’s border, the internal security situation of the state is not so conductive for their moving out of the state and the Army is needed to maintain the internal security situation in the state,” he said.

He pointed out that there would be timely reduction in the Army’s presence in the state when the security situation normalises. “There has been marked improvement in the security situation and efforts are underway to bring about a situation of peace and tranquility so that the management of internal security situation is entrusted to the paramilitary forces and the state police,” he said.

Omar Abdullah - A True Kashmiri and a True Indian!By: ABC | 26-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Sheik Abdullah and Nehru were responsible for keeping Kashmir in India. It was those two and the whole world against them. But Sheik Abdullah gave heartburns to Nehru from time to time by asserting his personal authority over Kashmir. We saw similar inconsistent behavior with Farooq Abdullah. Omar is different. His closeness to Rahul Gandhi is far more genuine than the original leaders. His vision of Kashmir being part of India is far more clear than that of his father and grandfather.
YesBy: Alex Periera | 25-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Umar very correctly assessed the situation,i also agree that people like rasheed's destiny is not with india,so lets send these slaves of arabic cultural imperialism back to arabia or land of the pure and make our kashmir free and heaven of peace and religious tolerance.
Bold Decision by Hon. Mr. Omar Abdullah.By: Bharat | 25-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The Hon.CM Mr.OA has made such a reasonable and logic statement ensuring continued military presence in J&K until such time we have credible information that the vestiges of terrorism has waned out. PC once stated that phased pull out of military will be accomplished from J&K. Means an Indian policeman carrying a thin hollow stick will be good enough to encounter a terrorist carrying AK47, bombs and grenades. People take education in UK & USA to achieve something better in life. PC studied at Harvard to become a solid simpleton, and to further become the HM of India by luck. In order to effectively root out terrorists, it would be even better to bring terrorism under Army jurisdiction without any strings attached to it from judiciary system and human rights bodies enabling smooth function of the Army. Look, Israeli army is very successful in containing terrorism. Let policeman look after law & order except terrorism. Let the policeman provide assistance to Army when required.
Pull forces outBy: Rashid Mahmood ( Patriot Kashmiri) | 25-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Mr. CM you have proved yet again that you will not leave any stone unturned by projecting yourself Indian Stooge!! how long will u wait for the normalization of situation. How long You and your dad will continue to make us Indian slaves. You have to accept th reality that Kashmiris (our) destiny is not with India.....for God sake Mr. CM (Ghadaar)
re: pull forces outBy: Maple | 25-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Rashid, ask yourself who brought the first gun to Kashmir. Surely those men didn't get surprised by the army's response, unless they were shortsighted fools? When you look ahead at the Kashmir which your descendants shall inherit, ask yourself what political dispensation they would prosper under. Also, the rest of the country envies Kashmir for having a Chief Minister with such clarity of thought and sincerity of purpose. Take a look at the CMs the rest of us have to bear with! As against your CM, the seperatist leadership comes across more as Pakistani stooges. When they call for boycotting elections, nobody listened to them. When one of them (Sajjad Lone) contested, he lost. May God bless Kashmir.
Terrorist KashmiriBy: Faisal Habib | 25-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Please go to school and try to learn the meaning of the word 'patriotism'. This is a very beautiful word in English language, but people like you will tarnish its beauty. You cannot be a patriot in any country.
faisalBy: Maple | 25-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Faisal, likewise Kashmir and Kashmiri are beautiful words too! Please do not put the tag 'terrorist' with Kashmiri. Terrorists are just terrorists, they do not have a rightful place in any ethnic group.
JBy: kumar | 25-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Sir, CM of J&K has correctly assessed the situtation on ground. Situation is yet not stable and time is yet not ripe to move army back to barracks. But what is more important then military operations is the rehabilitation of society. Biggest damage to Kashmir by militants is breaking up of fabric of secularism and brotherhood. It will take time but it can be done. All political parties and right thinking people must create a mass movement against the rehtoric for separation from India. Does Kashmiris want state to be another Swat or FATA? If terrorists are allowed thier way they will convert Kashmir into Swat or Afghanistan. People must see the logic and grester designs of Jihadis should be defeated and they should decide what is good for Kashmir. Kashmir can progress only with India. Any thought of separation from Indian Union will make Kashmir another Afghnaistan. No Kashmiri want it to become playfeild for extraregional powers, lest we want the demise of Kashmir and its culture.
