Trivedi announces jobs, officials say no such provision

Former Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had also promised jobs to the families of those killed in the Jnaneswari rail accident in West Bengal

Soon after taking oath as the Railway Minister on Tuesday,Dinesh Trivedi announced a job each for the kin of the people who were killed in the Kalka Mail mishap near Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. Senior officials in the ministry, however, said there was no such provision under which the jobs could be granted.

Former Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had also promised jobs to the families of those killed in the Jnaneswari rail accident in West Bengal that killed 148 people on May 28,2010 and also to the kin of 60 people killed in an accident near Sainthia in Birbhum district on July 19 last year. Jobs were also offered to the kin of the 23 people killed in the Gwalior Intercity Express accident at Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh on September 20,2010. But the officials said none of the jobs was sanctioned as there was no provision for it.

The recruitments are done by the Railway Board. There is no provision for jobs under compensatory grounds for people killed in accidents. Though jobs were offered by various ministers none of them has materialised yet, said a senior railway official.

Another official explained that these announcements were made as good gestures by the ministers and they were working on a change in the recruitment rules that could help them accommodate such jobs. It is a tedious process to change the recruitment rules and this could also take time. Till then nothing can be done, said the official.

Trivedi, who is on his way to Fatehpur, will travel to Rangia in Assam where the Guwahati-Puri Express had also derailed on Sunday following a blast.

Rahul meets victims, calls for prompt relief

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, who met those injured in the Kalka Mail accident at a hospital here, pulled up railway officials after the victims complained that they had not received the compensation that was promised. Rahul, who was accompanied by Union Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal and senior officials, promised the victims and their families all possible help.
