Pune-born shuttler Trupti Murgunde bagged the title at the Maldives Open badminton tournament held recently in the Maldives. She dominated all her games and won all of them in straight sets.
After getting a walkover in the first round,Trupti defeated Hettiarachchige Renu Chandrika of Sri Lanka in straight sets 21-12 and 21-9 in the second round. In the quarterfinal, she trounced Sumida Yukie of Japan 21-7 and 21-6 and set up a semifinal clash with Castilo Gelita of the Philippines. She won the first game 21-10 and was leading 11-3 in the second before her opponent retired hurt.
Trupti is delighted with her victory and will take a lot of confidence from it. Any victory is important and even though the Maldives Open is not the biggest tournament there is,I can take a lot of positives from it,she said. She feels that the tournament victory will give her a lot of confidence going into the Indian Open Badminton Championships which will begin on June 9.
Every player that I beat was Asian. This is an important statistic because most of the competition in the Indian Open will be Asian. I will be facing a Singaporean in the first round and I am confident of a victory, she said.
Even though she has not had enough time to prepare for the big tournament she feels that she practised enough in the Maldives.
I reached India only today and have not had enough time to practice. However,I am in good shape because of the rigorous practice sessions we went through in Maldives, she said.
Her recent victory gave her a jump of eight places in the ranking. She will want to go even higher by reaching the finals of the Indian Open.
