CPM general secretary Prakash Karat on Tuesday hit out at the UPA government for being over-enthusiastic in serving the interests of capitalists, blaming its wrong policies for the unprecedented rise in prices of essential commodities, unemployment and the plight of farmers. The future trading in essential commodities like wheat has not been done away with by the Congress-led UPA government because it does not want to hamper the interests of big companies and capitalists though it is fully aware that futures trading is mostly responsible for escalating prices of food items, said Karat at a party rally here. Karat said unabated price rise had reduced the real income and spending capacity of about 90 per cent of the countrys population, especially affecting the lives of the poor. He also referred to the Sengupta Committee report which said over 77 per cent of the countrys population could not spend more than Rs 20 per day.
