A VHP leader was critically injured on Friday when three assailants fired at him in Nagda, considered a stronghold of SIMI,spreading tension in the region.

As VHP cadres started damaging vehicles and forcing markets to shut, the administration imposed Section 144 in the town to which Safdar Nagori, the former general secretary of the banned students’ organisation, belongs.

Bherulal Tank,a senior functionary of the VHP in Ujjain region, was rushed to a local hospital and later shifted to a private hospital in Indore after he received three bullet wounds.

Tank, who has an agency of a right-wing newspaper, was distributing the copies in the morning because his hawker had not turned up. The assailants chose a relatively isolated locality to target Tank.

Right-wing organisations took to the streets blaming SIMI for the attack while the police said the allegation was premature.

DIG (Ujjain) Mayank Jain told The Indian Express that the victim himself did not name anyone in his statement to the police. He said some people had been rounded up but Tank was yet to identity them. The DIG said security had been stepped up in the region.

The VHP has called for a bandh in the entire Ujjain district on Saturday and asked cadres to hold protests in every district.
