Verdict against Cong,graft: BJP

A jubilant BJP hailed the victory of its candidates and allies in the by-elections,which had acquired added attention

A jubilant BJP on Monday hailed the victory of its candidates and allies in the by-elections,which had acquired added attention because they were seen as an indicator of the mood in the country. Though the BJP had extended support to Anna Hazare in his anti-corruption stir,it was not prepared to share credit with the activist or his associates for the victory of NDA nominees.

Haryana Janhit Congress chief Kuldeep Bishnoi, backed by the BJP,won the Hisar Lok Sabha seat with Congress’s Jai Prakash finishing a poor third, way behind INLD nominee Ajay Chautala, who came second. BJP candidate Bhimrao Tapkir bagged the Khadakwasla seat in Maharashtra, defeating NCP’s Harshada Wanjale. Khadakwasla is part of Baramati Lok Sabha seat represented by Supriya Sule, daughter of NCP chief Sharad Pawar.

In Bihar,JD(U) candidate Kavita Singh won from the Daraunda constituency, defeating Parmeshwar Singh of the RJD,who was supported by the LJP.

In the Banswada by-election in Andhra Pradesh,TRS candidate Pocharam Srinivasa Reddy defeated ruling Congress’s Srinivas Goud.

“This is an auspicious day for democracy,” BJP spokesman Shahnawaz Hussain said, while reacting to the outcome. “It is a verdict against the Congress, which is buried neck-deep in corruption,” he said. “The Congress has been reduced to number-three in these polls.”

“The people of Haryana,” according to him,“had put their seal of approval on the BJP alliance with Haryana Janhit Congress.” The BJP would contest eight of the 10 Lok Sabha seats and half of the 90 Assembly seats in general elections. The chief ministership,in case of the alliance winning in Assembly polls, will be shared by them for half the term each.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj also tweeted saying the BJP-HJC alliance will continue.

When asked if the BJP would give credit for the electoral success of the BJP and its allies to the anti-graft crusade of Anna and his team,Hussain said,“He (Anna) did not appeal for the victory of any party or candidate.” Anna,he pointed out, only made an appeal for the defeat of a party.

The Maharashtra result,Hussain added,would be a trend-setter,demonstrating the success of the BJP-Shiv Sena-RPI alliance.
