Want India in UNSC,but not Japan: S Korea

South Korea said that it would like India to become a permanent member of an expanded UN Security Council.

South Korea on Tuesday said that it would like India to become a permanent member of an expanded UN Security Council but also made it clear that it was not coming out in support due to New Delhi’s joint bid with Japan as part of G-4 grouping.

“We want India to join but because of the sentiment towards Japan,Korean political leaders are not willing to accommodate the position with regard to your (Indian) membership of the UNSC,” South Korean Ambassador Kim Joong-Keun said at a function here. “You have the right but there are some technical, procedural problems that we have,” Kim said while replying to a question on South Korea’s position on India’s claim.

India and Japan are members of the G-4 grouping along with Brazil and Germany and all four countries are jointly bidding for permanent UNSC membership.
