Nearly two months after its defeat in the LS polls,Left Front constituent Forward Bloc on Tuesday pin-pointed the reasons for the setback.

Following a two-day meeting of the Blocs central committee, general secretary Debabrata Biswas said the prime reason was the untimely withdrawal of support from the UPA government at the Centre. At the meeting which was held to discuss the poll debacle, senior leaders also pointed fingers at big brother CPM for adopting a faulty land acquisition policy and failing to tackle public discontent in Nandigram.

We are not favoring the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, but the way the decision to withdraw support was announced affected our poll prospects… The time and tactics for support withdrawal was not perfect, said Biswas.

A senior Bloc leader said: The withdrawal of support was never backed by leaders in Bengal and the decision was taken by Delhi-based Left leaders.

The Congress gained in in the election only because of the pro-people programme implemented by the government. We failed to benefit from them, although we forced the Congress to follow a pro-people agenda. On the other hand,we have failed to highlight the damages caused by nuke deal, said Biswas.
