Acting on a tip-off, the customs staff posted at Attari railway station, Amritsar, seized fake Indian currency amounting to Rs 10 lakhs from a lady passenger Pakeeja Khatun, coming from Pakistan in Samjhauta Express.
According to a press release issued by A.K Mehra, Commissioner of Customs, the woman was having Indian passport and had gone to Pakistan on a short visit. The fake currency consisting of five hundred rupees notes was concealed in cavities made in rubber chappals.
The custom’s intelligence wing had said that the fake currency was being smuggled into India by some unscrupulous elements from Pakistan and passengers of bus and train were being used for the purpose, added Mehra. The preliminary investigation revealed that the lady was acting as a carrier.
Efforts are being made to trace other persons behind this racket and follow up action has been taken at Delhi and other places. The woman has been been arrested.
