Amid concerns expressed by Lok Sabha MPs regarding the threat to the flow in Ganga due to proliferation of small hydro-electric dams in Uttarakhand,Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan today asserted that the Centre would not allow projects that reduce the flow in the Ganga downstream.
We will not allow Ganga to be reduced to a trickle of flow. No dam is allowed to be built that lessens the flow or create problems to the lower riparian states, Natarajan assured the Lok Sabha in her reply to a debate on the threat being posed to Ganga, initiated by Samajwadi Party deputy leader Rewati Raman Singh.
She,however, underlined that Uttarakhand was well within its rights to seek environmental clearance for hydro-electric projects. She added that the Centre had the power to ensure that these do not threaten the river.
