The PGIMER Department of Transfusion Medicine in collaboration with the city chapter of Indian Red Cross Society organised a blood donation camp to mark World Blood Donor Day on Sunday. Rare blood group donors were also honoured on the occasion.
While PGI Director Professor K K Talwar presided over the function,Jean Rodrigues was the chief guest.
Professor Emeritus and Founder Head of the department,Dr J G Jolly,who is also seen as a pioneer of the voluntary blood donation movement in the country,was also present.
He congratulated the donors and urged people to come forward for the noble cause of blood donation.
Others who were present included Deputy Commissioner R K Rao and SDM-East and Secretary of UT Indian Red Cross Society Niharika Rai.
The blood donors who were honoured on the occasion include: Harish Sharma,Manmohan Sharma,Jasbinder Singh,Jasbir Singh,Dr Dharam Vir Yadav,Sohan Lal,Jasbir Singh,Sudhir Marwaha,Ram Krishan Bhardwaj,Anshu Nangia,Pramod Sharma,Dr Ashish Jain,Vikas Grover and Raj Kumar.
Around 100 people volunteered at the camp at PGIMER while another 400 donated blood at a camp organised by
Nirankari Seva Mandal in DeraBassi.
World Blood Donor Day is celebrated on June 14 all over the world to mark the birthday of Karl Landsteiner,a Nobel laureate who discovered the ABO blood group system.
