After displaying her skills in the state and district level roller-skating championships, ten-year old Gurnoor Kaur (in the photo) has now been selected for the National Schools Championship. A student of Class V of the Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, she is practising day and night for this national event scheduled to take place in Chandigarh in November this year.
She says, “I get up at 4:30 am everyday, reach the skating ring near my school by 5 am and then starts the rigorous training session under the supervision of my coach, Bhag Singh. I practice on skates for an hour.
I am confident and hope to win a good position in the national championship.”
Gurnoor started learning skating about five years ago. She has won more than 12 gold and silver medals in the district and state level championships in the Under-11 category.
The budding champion says, “I owe my success to my parents, teachers and my coach who always inspire me. My dream is to represent India in the Olympics.”
Also fond of gymnastics, she is equally good in academics. Her father Dr Harinder Pal Singh and mother Dr Gurdarshan Kaur say, “She is a brilliant student and can adjust to any situation easily.” Her parents are homeopathic doctors. Following their footsteps, she aspires to be a cardiologist when she grows up.
Gurnoor says, “Skating and gymnastics are my hobbies but I want to serve ailing persons.” The only child of her parents, this young girl also loves to make sketches and paintings. Another hidden talent found ?
