A curious case of ‘pass’ student wanting ‘fail’ in HS

Normally, students who allege that their answersheets have not been checked properly demand that their marks to be increased. But in an exceptional development,a student who appeared in the Higher Secondary Examination this year, has filed a writ petition in the Calcutta High Court asking that her marks in one of the papers be reduced to zero.

Malabika Maiti,a student of East Midnapore, has said in her petition that she should get zero in mathematics as she had cancelled all the answers by red ink. But,strangely, she secured 54 in the paper. Her contention therefore is that her mathematics answer script was not properly examined.

Her counsel Gautam Dey said Malabika was able to answer only six or seven questions in the maths paper and realised that she could not secure good marks. “So,she cancelled all the answers by red ink with an aim that she will fail and therefore will get an opportunity to appear in the HS exam next year when she could better her performance,” said Dey.

Malabika has secured 64 in Bengali,61 in English,60 in chemistry,54 in mathematics,58 in physics. She got 54 in biology (optional elective) and 76 in environmental science.

“Once the candidate secures passing marks in the examination,he or she is not allowed to seat for the examination next year. Only failed candidates get the chance to reappear in the examination,” Dey added.

Justice Jotirmoy Bhattacharya has asked the Higher Secondary Council to produce Malabika’s answer script on August 17.
