Then when the evidence became overwhelming and increasingly evident that it was serving army officers on the telephone to the terrorists in Mumbai guiding their every move the denials became louder and more hysterical. Finally, due to pressure from Washington, there was reluctant acknowledgement that there could be Pakistanis involved.

With Swat now in the hands of the Taliban, things have got much worse in Pakistan but the terrorism that country faces has to do with its own policies. The Pakistani army’s links with jihadi groups is so deep and complex that it is sometimes hard to separate the two. This is directly because of the policies of General Pervez Musharraf who fooled the American government into believing that he was their best ally in the war on terrorism.

It is vital that India not allow a democratic government in Pakistan to succeed in fooling the Americans again. But, what can we do when the Government of India is in suspended animation? If there is one lesson that can be learned from this very long drawn out campaign it is that we must not allow such a long election again.

The stated reason for the Election Commission to stretch the election out was security. They feared attacks from jihadi terrorists and Naxalites so not only did we have to stretch the election out we even had to drive away the IPL. How ironic that this very long election has served mostly to enhance the threat to national security and not reduce it.

Long election.By: Narinder Bhardwaj | 18-May-2009 Reply | Forward I agree that the election took time but the planning is done by EC. This time the election in bihar and West Begal have shown that rigging was minimal. I am sure by the time we have next election the polling booths will be covered on CCTV and the action in the polling booth will be shown outside to the public in general. The coverage should not cover the EVM place. This will show to the public at large if any rigging is done. For this splitting of election should be accommodated. Efficiency of the staff can be increased to reduce the time gap. We can say Good Job done by EC this time.
Long drawn electionBy: Vic Sangha | 29-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward Hats off to Tavleen Singh for always writing columns of real relevance. This long drawn out election has brought not laurels but laughter from the world. When the country was far poorer elections were much faster. Elections have become freer and fairer because of the public's non tolerance of nonsense not because of these long drawn schedules. Hopefully some sense will prevail on decision makers in the next round
Security or availability of Trio?By: Appu | 28-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward Election commission claims it's long because of security. The reality is that Congress has only 3 people to showcase in front of people. The Nehru Namoonas. People won't vote the ugly scoundrel in the rest of Congress. They can't be everywhere at the same time. So, under the guise of security, the Election commission being full of Nehru Chamchas arranged for the trio to cover more constituencies by slicing the time. Clever Huh!
our policiesBy: Ashutosh Kaul | 26-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward Unfortunately our policies are fuzzy without any long term objective. In that respect we should learn from Pakistan. No matter what kind of government is in power their policies towards India remain the same.Taliban are nothing but an instrument of Pakistan's establishment.Tavleen is right. There is no distinction between them and Pak army. They act in synch. Some fixed matches may be played with each other to fool the world but otherwise they are on the same side.
NothingBy: JJJJ | 26-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward How can we forget that more than a thousand Indian soldiers died at the hands of Velupillai Pirabakaran’s guerrillas? Good butHow can we forget that more than TEN thousand of CIVILIANS died at the hands of Rajiv's soldiers?
