Srinagar, October 7:: Army and Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir have killed a militant believed to be an Indian Mujahideen cadre hailing from Kovalam in Kerala.

Central agencies had been monitoring certain leads which said a group of people hailing from Kerala along with Lashker-e-Taiba's support were trying to enter Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) through North Kashmir.

The information was shared with the army headquarters in the national capital and a plan was chalked out to nab the exfiltrating group with the help of the state police.

A militant identified as Shakeel Mohammed hailing from Kovalam was killed in the encounter that took place between Nine Para and Special Operations Group in Dever area of Lolab Valley in North Kashmir.

A hunt is on to track down those who have escaped after the encounter, sources said.

Shakeel is the first Keralite to have been killed in nearly two decades of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir. A photo identity card was found from his pocket besides some religious writings written in Malayalam, the sources said.

A team of Kerala Police is scheduled to visit Kashmir valley soon for carrying out the identification process of killed militant.

The sources said the group is still scattered over the area and hunt was on to nab others with maximum efforts to nab them alive to ascertain the exact ramifications of Lashker's network in Kerala.

Another militant was killed in the same area but his identification showed that he was from Pakistan but was part of the same group that was exfiltrating into PoK along with a group of Keralites.

LeT has been trying to make inroads into the country's hinterland and had sought recruits from various parts of the country.

Police and army were maintaining a studied silence over this encounter officially but they acknowledged that this development was alarming.

The encounter comes close on the heels of intelligence reports suggesting that the banned SIMI had begun preparing itself for "participation" in the Indian Mujahideen offensive in December 2007 when nearly 40 of its members participated in a militant training camp held near Aluva, Kerala.

Earlier in February this year, Mohammed Yahya Kammukutty, 31, hailing from Mukkom in Kozhikode district of Kerala, was arrested as part of a continuing probe into a SIMI network in Karnataka that has already lead to the arrest of six youths from northern Karnataka, including four medical students.

Joke of the day by Indian on 2008-10-08 11:49:06.883378+05:30
"But the armed forces have shot the wrong man.All his neighbours and family know he was a mild mannered, law abiding gentleman. He never hurt a fly.He was very religious,he would offer prayers 8 times a day.It is always like this, the Indian Govt always shoots and kills persons belonging to the minority community!" Hahaha......just joking guys!
peace-loving people Kerala Terrorists by ramesh kumar on 2008-10-08 10:11:05.477011+05:30
Terrorist spread across the state during the five years term of the congress govt. last time when A.K. Antony, and then Oommen Chandy chaired the CM post. During this time, the entire state was under the control of Ministers from 'minority' (secular-peaceloving!!!) community, which helped spread terrorism in the state. And now it has gone out of control, that Kerala has now become a hub of terrorists in India, including training and despatching centers of terrorists. The training center they used in Vagaman in the sourthen district was first identified by Gujarat Police, not the Kerala Police! What is our Kerala Police doing? Just to appease the minority community, all security departments are closing their eyes towards criminals and terrorists. No wonder if Kerala becomes the next Kashmir. Achievement of congress goverments.
'Keralam Valarunnu' by C. Nair on 2008-10-08 00:50:31.209074+05:30
One recalls the famous series f poems by Pala Narayanan Nair, "Keralam Valarunnu" which narrates the Keralite's expanding spheres of outstanding activities outside its confines. He missed out on this one.
Minorities by Siva on 2008-10-07 23:03:54.028208+05:30
See This is the fate of our "secularism". Our govts does what not everything to appease these minorities. These minorities enjoying all the freedom in India and stabing in the back.

Terrorist deserve punishment by Johney on 2008-10-07 17:58:16.843282+05:30
Terrorists should be treated as terrorist not tourist. There is no chance in going to that area as tourist at this time when everyone is aware that it is not safe to go to Kashmir. That too near the LOC. Whether they are from Kerala or any other parts, no mercy is required. They may start killing innocent people if we leave them now.
Amarsingh and terorrism by Rajendra Patel on 2008-10-07 16:48:07.305127+05:30
AMARSINGH DOES NOT HAVE A COMMON MAN COMMON SENSE,I THINK HE DOES NOT HAVE BRAIN AT ALL,HE IS A JERK IN INDIAN POLITICS. SIMPLE LOGIC HE DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THAT NOBODY IN THE WORLD WOULD LIKE TO BE GETTING KILLED IN SO CALLED FAKE ENCOUNTER. AND IF DOES NOT HAVE FAITH IN INDIAN POLICE WHY HE ASKS FOR PROTECTION FROM POLICE?
Terrosim and Amar Singh by kk on 2008-10-07 16:26:04.182867+05:30
Terrorists are terrorist and does not matter where they come from Kerala or Punjab or Orrisa. All terrorists are ruthless and should be treated the same way. No mercy for them and it does not matter what their aims are. If they cannot sit down to talk then they must be shot before they kill innocent people. We have another terrorist called Amar Singh of SP party. He should resign first before he speaks from his foul mouth tongue. He is no more than a goonda and keep suppoting terrorists for his own publicity. It is time Goverment took some action on him
A dream - India under Military Rule by Shaji on 2008-10-07 16:14:27.350654+05:30
Terrorism in India could only be stopped if our brave Army topple the govt. and take over the control of it. We the common public are fed-up with our political parties and their selfish leaders who have ruined the country and now supporting the terrorists to kill maximum number of civilians on the street. China has developed not by democratically elected govt. Some brave Armymen should come forward and save our country from the existing crooks of criminals loitering in our Parliament.

Not the problem
by Ashwin on 2008-10-07 21:27:56.970719+05:30
Its not democracy that is the problem. If that were so, then how come there arent attacks against US. The problem is we have an incompetent govt. whose sole priority is its survival or just plain incompetence(remember BJP's 1999 hijack handling, come on the least u could have done is injected those released terrorists with rabies, hiv etc etc) There are no consequences for these politicos unlike in other countries.

India..........
by Basant on 2008-10-07 17:39:53.163634+05:30
Look at Pakistan Mr. Shaji. military has really wiped out terrorist there if your theory is correct. look at No.Korea, Cuba Mr. Shaji, they are run by dictators and militaries. Your thinking process is skewed. All western democratic countries are developed countries. Fault lies not only in politicians but in public also who votes for crooks. As far as country development is concern India is doing fine. Sooner or later we will be up to par with any developed countries in the world.

Military Rule?!!!
by The All Knowing on 2008-10-07 17:38:54.638924+05:30
Haven't the examples of military rule in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, etc., not taught you anything at all?

military rule
by john.p.abraham on 2008-10-07 16:34:29.019683+05:30
Your idea is marvellous. Now we can speak about terrorism. But the terror caused by military can not be spoken against. You seem to have not heard about the Tynamon(spelling mistake may be there)square incident in China.Terror can not be stopped by terror eventhough one may take out a thorn with another thorn
Terrorism by KVSKumar on 2008-10-07 16:13:46.29223+05:30
It is high time a federal agency is formed solely to tackle the terrorism and state polices are divested of this task. The Govt should also immediately order an investigation into the reason as to why most of these 40 SIMI men were released soon after their arrest and under whose instruction and influence.
Obviously a fake encounter by Kannan on 2008-10-07 15:53:09.465297+05:30
This encounter should be condemned in the strongest of terms. Obviously they were tourists mersmerised by beauty of Kashmir valley failed to see the dividing line and troops and fence stationed there. The religious writings they possessed vindicate that they were on a pilgrimage somewhere and if weapons are found in their possession, it must be for defending themselves from wild animals. AK-47 and rocket launchers are expecially good to keep wild animals at bay. Damn our security forces for killing innocents.

Good sense of sarcasm

Mr Kannan, I appreciate your sense of sarcasm. Sincerely hope that our vily politicians, the so called "secular, pro-human rights, intelligentia" and the minority appeasing apologists of our country do not take your words at face value and twist it to suit their agenda. This is pseudo- secular India. Anything can happen.Jai Hind.
