A drought of heroes

  • I feel sorry for the Marathi manoos. It seems there is only one hero worth celebrating in the entire history of Maharashtra—Shivaji. So after CS terminus and airport, we are now to have a CS Statue of Liberty at the cost of several crores. Neither Tukaram nor Dnyaneshwar—or Ramdas, Bajirao/Mastani, Tilak, Gokhale, or any writer or poet—is good enough for a statue. No Marathi heroes since 1680!

Mayawati is also running out of heroes. After Ambedkar and Kanshiram, she could only find herself as a subject for statues, there being no more heroes among the Dalits. The BJP is in an even worse position since it has only one hero—Sardar Patel—and he died in 1950 before the founding of the party. It does have a great anti-hero which it shares with RSS. This is Jinnah. But then, only if he is unredeemably evil. A hint of goodness and there would be no raison d’etre for him.

Actually I don’t see the point of RSS at all; not in the 21st century. When it was founded, fascism was in fashion and the notion of marching around in khaki half-pants was appealing to some. But a quasi-militaristic, authoritarian, macho organisation is so 1920s that there is no chance anyone born since 1975 (that is, 75 per cent of the voters) could have any use for it. The idea that RSS will sort out the BJP is a laughable one. It should start by disbanding itself, since everything it wanted to do is pointless now, with India as forward as it is.

    ... contd.

Re: Meghnad Desai's Drought of heroesBy: Anurag Dave | 01-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Meghnad Desai better mind his own business looking after his lordship and the Labour party, more so since he has quit India to become a british subject years ago. He mentions the house of lords being a chamber of "wise " people, while conveniently avoiding two bitter truths - (1) the house of lords till not such a long time ago was a house of feudal aristocrats which now british people themselves want to abolish (2) the labour govt. of Tony Blair was found guilty of having awarded lordships to those who paid money to the labour party or did favours to them. Meghnad Desai suggests that we should have more spineless, timid and utterly politically incompetent goverment ministers like Manmohan Singh, who are not elected albeit "selected" but some party powers. If this is to be so, what is the point in a democracy ? The reason why millions of indians laid their lives to earn our freedom was not to be ruled by imported indians who are propped up by anglicised pseudosecular indian media.
Drought of LeadersBy: P.N. Sarin | 30-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Lee Kuan Yew, the architect of modern Singapore, once said that he required only 300 honest, efficient and capable leaders to build Singapore. By that standard India requires at least 750,000 such leaders to develop a modern India. Do we have even 75 such leaders at present? Moderinisation of India must begin with modernisation of Indian political parties.
DROUGHT OF HEAROESBy: NIRANJAN | 30-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward I DISAGREE. WE, IN INDIA, ARE AWASH WITH HEROES. PLEASE LOOK AROUND YOU. EVERY POLITICIAN, NETA OR EVEN A GOVT. OFFICIAL IS A HERO. PEOPLE FALL AT THE FEET OF THE HEROES, LIVE OR OTHERWISE, REGULARLY. IN ADDITION, IF WE DID NOT HAVE HEROES WE WOULD NOT HAVE A FESTIVAL EVERY OTHER DAY, COMMEMORATING THE BIRTH OR SOME OTHER OCCASSION IN LIFE OF A HERO. SO, I BELIEVE WE IN INDIA HAVE HEROES GALORE, BECAUSE WE CREATE HEROES AT THE DROP OF A HAT. ALSO, IF WE DID NOT HAVE HEROES, WHY WOULD WE HAVE SO MANY STATUES ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. IF YOU DOUBT ME, JUST GO AND TAKE A LOOK AT LUCKNOW.
A drought of heroesBy: ram | 30-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Maharashtra has been ruled by incompetent and corrupt leaders in last 2 decades.Mumbai has been overrun bu slumlord-builder-bureaucrat -politician nexus and sits citizenry suffers innumerable assaulted not only by terrorist attacks! Just take example of slums which shows Congress Government has no respect for the law. AS per High court 1995 was cutoff date for slums to be authorised but now the Chief Minister has unilaterally extended it to 2000 for illegal gains from builders.Mumbai should be known as SLUMBAY a truly secukar name at altar of sham democracy in India. Governments all follow Congress Hand as all national and state schemes not only in Maharashtra but all over India has been hijacked by Nehru-Gandhi Dynasty. Any city/town you to India or almost all national schemes have been named after Jawaharal Nehru and more so Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi which actually resembles cult of Communit countries when Lenin and Stalin were deified. Need I say more Mr.Desai?
Meghnad Desai who?By: Manoj Gohil | 30-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward What exactly qualifies Meghnad Desai to write on politics in India, particularly the complex churning that Indian politics is undergoing? Would the Express do its readers a courtesy and consider introducing the eminences it selects to write about us? After reading a few of his articles it is clear that he is no admirer of right-wing ideologies and harbors a hatred of the RSS and its affiliates. That,in itself, is nothing exceptional. What is exceptional is that he has nothing remarkable or analytic to say about the politics in India. His articles either expound on his prejudices or ramble about irrelevant comparisons with British politics. Would the Express consider sparing us this mediocrity amongst an otherwise excellent line-up of articles? Surely there are better left-leaning commentators available.
