At last there are signs that the Government of India has had enough of Pakistan thumbing its nose at us. Last week the Home Minister said loudly, without the hint of a pulled punch, that Pakistan had done nothing to bring the men who attacked Mumbai to justice. He mentioned Hafiz Mohammed Sayeed by name and said it was preposterous for the Pakistani government to claim that he could not be arrested on grounds of insufficient proof. How dare proof even be asked for? The Lashkar-e-Toiba was behind the attack on Mumbai and Sayeed is the man who founded this dreadful organisation. What more proof is needed? So, well done Mr Chidambaram.

The vast majority of Indians are sickened by Pakistan’s constant prevarication and silly excuses. Personally, I find deeply offensive the manner in which Pakistani ministers draw comparisons between what happened in Mumbai with what is happening in Swat and Waziristan. We are victims too, they like to say, and this is nonsense. Pakistan is a victim of its own malevolent policies. India is a victim of violent, religious fanatics whom we neither funded nor spawned. They hate India with a hatred that we can do nothing about.

Now that the Government of India is showing some spine can it go one step further and state categorically that there will be no dialogue with Pakistan until it shows understanding of the gravity of the attack on Mumbai. It cannot be compared with any other act of terrorism because, as with 9/11, it crossed the boundaries of terrorism and became an act of war. If the Pakistan government cannot see this then there is no point in dialogue of any kind. There is nothing to talk about.

While the Home Minister was finally showing some spunk, the Minister of External Affairs was swanning around Delhi’s five star hotels. Now that he has been turfed out by orders of his High Command, can he please get down to some serious work? While he was lotus eating in the Maurya Hotel’s most expensive suite, Chinese troops crossed into Indian territory and made a mockery of national security by spending an afternoon painting Chinese graffiti on Indian stones. Can we not at least throw those wretched stones back across the border with India written on them? Can we not tell China that one more incursion into our territory will result in serious consequences? Chinese incursions into Indian territory have nearly doubled in the past two years but we continue to behave as if this was just routine cross-border fun.

Our friendly behaviour has not inspired any reciprocity from the Chinese. Quite the opposite has happened. The Chinese treat us with such open contempt that they dare to object publicly to the President of India visiting Arunachal Pradesh and make a noisy protest to the Asian Development Bank when it offers to loan us some money for a water project in Arunachal. Why do we allow China to get away with this kind of thing?

Why do we not, at the very least, raise our voice in the forums of the world to point out that China is a very, very bad country. Its main contribution to international affairs has been to support some of the worst regimes in the world. North Korea, Myanmar and Sudan to mention only three. The monsters who rule these countries would not be able to treat their people worse than animals if they did not have China’s loving support.

The United States and some other Western countries may have economic reasons why they do not dare talk too loudly against China but we have no such problem. China has never done us any favours or offered us its friendship except in those duplicitous ‘Hindi-Cheeni bhai, bhai’ days when it was plotting to invade India while making a fool of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Its behaviour towards us has not improved since then either. Instead of friendship, China has gone out of its way to cause trouble for India. It helped Pakistan build its nuclear bomb with the intention of keeping India in check, it funds terrorist groups that work against India and most recently a Chinese ‘think tank’ produced a paper that suggested ways in which India could be broken up. We all know that the only people allowed to ‘think’ in China are those that have the permission of its communist rulers.

So now that the External Affairs Minister has been brought down from the lofty heights of the Maurya Hotel’s presidential suite, can he make a quick trip to the border that the Chinese graffiti artists crossed and make a formal protest. This should take the form of throwing those defiled stones onto the Chinese side. If the Chinese do not like this too bad for them.

Foreign Policy for whimpsBy: V.Muthuswami | 18-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Congratulations for your courage of conviction and boldness in expressing what is happening to our MEA bosess and their pussy cat bureaucrats. It takes manliness of a well-run government to shorn of the myths and understand the reality; and then, conduct our foreign affairs with realistic and appropriate actions to prevent any Chinese (mis)adventure.I also have problem with IE in losing my right to freedom of expression, thanks to their impolite truncating the comments from genuinely patriotic citizems of this country.
kudos..By: rohini | 15-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward i am an avid reader of your column and i must congratulate you for articulating such wonderful piece on such relevant topics. i sincerely hope the concerned people are reading this and take necessary action soon.
A Policy Of WimpsBy: deepan gill | 14-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward India is the only country in the world where communists to this day claim that Communism works. Well when we have such people in India who did not denounce the 1962 war, when these people have inflitrated every institution of india, from education to religion, what can we expect? Chinese dont have to do anything their comrades in India will make sure nothing is done. Just wonder how China would have reacted inf India had intruded in their territory? You are a little late Mrs. Singh but I am happy you are seeing the bigger picture, Jai Ho
A foreign policy for wimpsBy: Menon | 14-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Talveen honey!! Grow up!! We are the short dark rice Eating injuns who will show our other cheek for reasons well known. We seem to lack something that defines manliness. We pretend we are being chanakian, while the real reason is we are shit scared of every shadow. The day we decide enough is enough and stand up to Porkistan and amirkhans and UKstanis, who are using porkistan as the cats paw to hit and stifle India we would have grown up and world will notice us. For that we have to first hang all the babus-retired or not- who are/were responsible for delaying either indigenous production or import of necessary military hardware. We must hang the jernails responsible for asking for futuristic nonexistent weapons that are mirages while stifling Indian manufacture and sundry politicians who are responsible for the delays and demoralisations. We must also hang the policeman who is old and senile yet pretend they are greater than the best strategists. Tilll then cry India!! Cry!!
Thanks for some blunt talkBy: S Raghavan | 13-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Too often do we politely pretend that all is well, or that we have done whatever we can to address the challenges we face as nation. When the tail is stuck firmly between our legs, we cannot work out sensible positions to deal with our neighbors. Thank you for calling a spade a spade.
