A friend in deed

  • In showering praise on US President George W. Bush for his personal commitment to implement the civil nuclear initiative, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has drawn predictable flak from his opponents at home. Dr Singh’s warm farewell to Bush at White House last Thursday should, however, mark the beginning of a new trend in India’s diplomatic culture — of owning the nation’s friends in public. It adds to India’s reputation as a rising power that it can acknowledge its friends and keep them. Unlike our leaders on the left and right, blindsided by either ideology or opportunism, urban India has consistently given Bush one of the highest ratings in the world over the last few years. This, in turn, was rooted in Bush’s single-handed reversal of the entrenched US hostility towards India on Kashmir and non-proliferation.

Whether it was in preventing Washington’s nuclear ayatollahs from wrecking the deal over the last three and a half years, or the raw exercise of American power to clear the deal through the 45-nation

Nuclear Suppliers Group earlier this month, Bush was ready to spend any amount of political capital to build a new partnership with India. Over the last couple of weeks, despite an unprecedented financial crisis that has consumed Washington, Bush pressed a reluctant American Congress to approve the 123 agreement on short order. The scale of the opposition was evident in

Saturday’s vote in the House of

Representatives. The fast track, amendment-free procedure demanded that the India bill get a two thirds majority, 290, in a house of 435. The bill scraped through with 298 votes. Without White House’s steam roller, the opponents of the deal — 107 Democrats voted against it — could have killed it with simple legislative manoeuvre. Within hours of the House vote, Bush began to demand that the US Senate approve the India bill before it adjourns this week and consummate the nuclear deal.

    ... contd.

A friend in deed Indian Express editorialBy: suresh sheth | 29-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward There is another reason also for likes of Howard Berman to drop his opposition that India Express misses. US knows very well that if next government is that of BJP, it will demand a rewrite of this n-deal, asking US to explicitly accept India as a ‘nuclear weapons state’. That will give India same rights as five Brahmins of nuclear club so far as enrichment and nuclear reprocessing as well as nuclear tests are concerned because India is denied those rights under the n-deal to be signed by Rice and Mukherjee. US knows all too well that next BJP Indian government will be obliged to follow the deal without the rights of five nuclear Brahmins and that is the reason why Bush has been successful to overcome opposition of Howard Berman.
What an edit?By: Syed Atique Hussain | 29-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward Besides everything said about President Bush, what is this nuclear ayatollah? Some Indian writers/journalists love to create their own vocabulary without any etymological knowledge. This is not even Hinglish, it's simply foolish. The closest translation of Ayatollah is God's sign or symbol and to get a degree or title of ayatollah one has to study not less than 25-30 years and publish research papers and books. Please be careful in using words, that's what writing edits is all about, is not it?. Simply put, if a renowned bully, liar, nincompoop person is my friend, I would like be to distanced from him rather than shout from the rooftop that he is my friend and I love him!!!
Doctors's greatest victoryBy: G.Sriniwasan | 29-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward If Mrs Gandhi was humbled by the Republicans in 1971,the same Republicans led by BUSH ensured that India and Dr.Manmohan are offered a high Coffeetable. That India has come a long way from a Poverty stricken thirdworld country to a confident and established Nuclear Power, thanks to the Political adroitness of the Doctor and the Commitment of Bush to give its rightful place in the comet of Nations. Now it is upto the YOUTH of India to SNATCH the BATON from Dr.Manmohan and lead India;s MARCH to great heights.Jai Hind
No matter what but Bush is Friend of india!!!!By: abdul parkar | 29-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward No matter what happened in Iraq, But for indai BUSh did help. If he did not have used his powers India would not have even passed Through NSG. He used his complete power and influence. He also used his power to tame down the stuborn American senate to pass the 123 agreement. I think our PM did the right thing calling him the friend of india. Our PM atleast knows who is friend and who is not. The BJP and the left are curse to india till these two parties are not wiped out completely india will strugle to develop completely. And also we indians should change our attitude completly, we oppose every project, if we keep opposing everything how will good happen. We should oppose our energy against corruption and not againt good project. Never follow the misleading politician.
