As Delhi gets ready for the Commonwealth Games next October, renovating and redeveloping many areas, the Games organising committee is slowly settling into its new, “more stylish” office.
The Games committee has taken nine floors in the New Delhi City Centre-II on rent. The building is adjacent to the NDMC headquarters near Jantar Mantar.
The 12-storey building was completed recently, nearly 15 years after the foundation stone was laid.
The Games committee’s swish offices are not coming cheap, though: according to committee officials, they are paying “upwards of Rs 1 crore” per month to reserve the nine floors till the Games get over. Nearly 1,000 members of the Games Secretariat have already moved in, and will be stationed there for at least the next 20 months.
NDMC officials said the building has been leased out to the Games committee till April 2011. According to the lease document, the committee took the floors on rent from last November; the officials moved in this July 13 as the interiors were being done.
While all the floors are functional, work is on to build a modern and furnished reception. Work on branding and advertising at the headquarters is also not complete yet. All remaining work, officials said, is scheduled for completion before the Commonwealth Games Federation meets from October 5 to 15.
Sources said over Rs 10 crore has been spent on designing the interiors. “The design concept of the building is an amalgam of tradition and technology,” said Sangeeta Welingkar, member of the Games Image and Look Group. “Each floor has been done up keeping a different theme in mind — all these themes are related to the Games.”
