The CCTV footage from the six cameras installed on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link is not being monitored by any of the agencies even as the city police are seeking funds to secure it. The high-tech control room set up at the Bandra-end of the latest landmark does not even have traffic policemen to monitor the movement of vehicles.
According to officials, six CCTV cameras have been installed at different spots on the sea link, including the 126 metre-high central tower. One of them has been installed under the segments to monitor any movement in the sea.
“Right now, the footages are being recorded. The traffic police have asked for connectivity at the Worli headquarters to monitor the footages. The process is underway, but it will take time. In the meantime, if the traffic police want to monitor it from the control room here, they’re welcome,” said Satish Gavai, vice-chairman and managing director, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).
A senior MSRDC official said, “The cameras have been installed at different heights. The one under the carriageway doesn’t function at times due to high wind pressure and moisture. So far we have six cameras; another four-five would be installed on the north-carriageway once the construction is completed.”
Toll-collecting agency Mumbai Entry Point Ltd (MEP), which is in charge of the control room, also confirmed the situation. “Our job is to collect toll for a specific period. The surveillance is to be done by an agency appointed by the MSRDC or the city police. As of now, there is no agency monitoring it, at least no one from MEP,” said Jayant Mhaiskar, managing director, MEP Ltd.
