A Lasting Impression

As a child, Delhi-based artist Sidharth remembers listening to folk stories in his village Bassian (Punjab), where that was the only source of entertainment. Now, his work titled Carrying the cow, depicting a man walking and carrying a cow on his shoulders, is an image from one of these folk tales whose moral was "practice makes a man perfect". The work is part of an ongoing exhibition in the Capital titled "Lasting Impressions".

"The story is that of a man who would carry a calf on his shoulder everyday. Owing to the practice, he could still carry it with ease even when the calf grew into a bulky cow," explains the 56-year-old artist.

With an aim to promote printmaking, the exhibition brings together as many as 50 works by 13 artists, who have experimented with their original prints of lithographs, etchings and engravings for the display.

Bangalore-based Ravi Kumar Kashi has worked around the concept of "holding on and letting go of possessions" in his work Hold-Let Go where he has combined etching and drawing. Drawn on the print of two sides of the book, one side portrays things that human beings often possess or long to buy — a car, trophies, books, a trip to Paris and a chauffeur. On the other side, Kashi has drawn a man meditating, a holy book and a candle that has not be lit with the words "let go" written alongside.
