A new tune

Kalyani Bondre's 'Raga on the Beat' is a classical music concert that will feature western beats and instruments

Kalyani Bondre’s ‘Raga on the Beat’ is a classical music concert that will feature western beats and instruments

Hindustani classical vocalist and economist Kalyani Bondre will present the concert,‘Raga on the Beat’,on Friday,April 27,at the University Women’s Association Hall. On being asked about the unique name of her concert, she says,”The theme concert will showcase different raga-based compositions like Bandish,Thumri,Tarana,Ghazals and classical-based film songs. But there will be a contemporary, western sound, with instruments like the keyboard and electronic percussions.”

But to maintain the classical feel of the event, these western instruments will be accompanied by traditional instruments like the tabla. Bondre will be accompanied by Amit Joshi on the tabla and electronic percussions, and Rohit Kulkarni on the keyboard. Bondre feels that such an event will attract more people to a classical concert than usual. “People have this mindset that classical music is hard to understand, but this concert is something everyone can enjoy, you don’t need to be a ‘trained listener’.

Bondre started learning music at the young age of six,and hopes that youngsters should increasingly understand the beauty of classical music. “I hope that the younger generation will find this interesting. This event is free for anyone who is interested.”

(‘Raga on the Beat’,will start at 6:00pm on Friday,April 27,at the University Women’s Association Hall)
