This spring the British Council has turned over a new leaf
On Friday evening,passers-by who usually walk past British Councils square structure stopped in their tracks. Beyond the boundary wall at the entrance,on a lifesized projection screen, floated images, shadows of those who were participating in Delhi-based digital artist Vishal K Dars interactive installation. Titled Navgunjar: The facade As A Canvas,Dars installation focused on the synthesis of human presence and interaction, where the silhouette of an individual involves itself with a digital jungle of a variety of animals.
This innovative computer generated installation was only the tip of the new approach adopted by the British Council.
Step into the revamped and refurbished premises and explore the new setting. The foyer is no longer a staid little zone with the red stools,it looks far more like a visa office now, with a long front desk.
We have a token system now,so that there is no more chaos. Youre called by the number and the staff will assist you. Also theres a new high capacity waiting area where more staffers are stationed, says Anjoo Mohan from the organisation.
The library on the first floor is a visual treat with plenty of colour therapy working in its favour. As you enter, walk into the Quick Zone where the latest in British literature, music and art is displayed. The new motto is Belong,Be Inspired and Be Successful. While the Be Inspired section of the library focuses on new collections every fortnight,Be Successful is where students applying to the UK should head to, says Mohan.
Apart from new additions to their books and DVD section, music lovers can head to the music shower. Sit in front of the plasma screen, choose your artist and music will wash over you from the Soundtube speakers placed overhead.
The library is stocking new music CDs from the UK that can be issued along with DVDs.
Gone are the days when you had to manually issue all your books: an automatic check in-check out counter allows members to sign in and work out their own membership accounts. A library after your own heart and on your own terms, now thats a good thing.
