A Sip of History

Fancy a sip of a 972-year-old beer? Despite its unpronounceable name, Weihenstephan comes from the world's oldest brewery and is now available in India. Originally brewed at Weihenstephan Abbey, in Freising, Germany, by the Benedictine monks, the brewery has been in operation since 1040 AD.

Weihenstephan's wheat beer has the slightly sweet, frothy taste as well as the light, almost ephemeral body natural to wheat beer. Ten types of wheat beer were launched on Monday on the opening night of the The Beer Cafe in Connaught Place, through a tie-up with Cerana, which is well-known for introducing several craft beers from around the world to India. The phrase "the oldest beer in the newest pub" was an oft-repeated phrase through the evening. Nobody complained because Weihenstephaner, true to its reputation, tastes superior than most beer brands. But then, the brewery has had almost a millennium to perfect its recipe.
