Chandigarh, November 09: Gone are the days when countries relied only on conventional methods for fighting war. The time has now come to stun the enemy with localised nuclear and biological attack. It is evident with the efforts that China and India are making to score over each other, if a war breaks out.

The Army is contemplating the idea of building deep tunnels in Kashmir, along its borders with China and Pakistan, to protect its troops from nuclear, chemical and biological attacks, if any, at the hands of the two countries.

There have been threats coming from Pakistan of a possible use of nuclear weapons against India. While the retaliatory action by India could virtually wipe out Pakistan from the international map, it is, nonetheless, preferable to equip ourselves against any lethal attacks.

Our intelligence agencies confirm the reports that China has undertaken the construction of a large-scale tunnel project on the border between India and China’s Tibetan region. It is, therefore, the need of the hour for India to start building its tunnel network to thwart any attack from China in the event of a war.

Border disputes have plagued relations between India and China for decades, and had also led to war in 1962. While India has claims that Beijing is “illegally holding” a part of Kashmir, China lays stakes on large tracts of Arunachal Pradesh. On the other hand, both India and Pakistan, since Independence, have been fighting for Kashmir, which has already been divided into two parts, each controlled by India and Pakistan.

China has been increasing its defence budget every year by 15 to 18 per cent. The kind of investments that China is making in research and development can pose a threat to India in the future. While they have already constructed roads and other defence-oriented structures on the border, the tunnels, now, are a major cause for concern.

We have already lost men and land to our neighbouring countries. To avert such situations, the strategy should be to prevent enemies from gauging our strength. A tunnel network in Kashmir is an option worth considering.
