The family of Captain Kanwaljit Singh, cooperation minister in the SAD-BJP government who died in a road accident last year, will hold a function on February 26 to mark his death anniversary. Almost a year after the accident, the Punjab government is,however, yet to come out with the report of the magisterial inquiry conducted into the case.

The accident took place on March 29 last year when the car in which Kanwaljit was traveling collided with two trucks on the Chandigarh-Ludhiana highway near Kharar. Following pressure from the late leader’s family and followers, the government had marked an inquiry to the then Patiala divisional commissioner,Jasbir Singh Bir.

No government official, police officer or political leader is willing to speak on the report, which Bir claims to have submitted already.

Sources close to Kanwaljit’s son and MLA Jasjit Singh Bunny said the report was submitted almost five months ago. “This issue may snowball into a major controversy as supporters want answers on their leader’s death. If the government has the inquiry report,it should be made public,” said one of them.

A conspiracy theory over Kanwaljit’s death had surfaced after security personnel accompanying him during the crash made certain observations to the police. “The second truck was stationary, but as soon as our car came near it started moving and hit it,” Kanwaljit’s personal security officer (PSO) Rattan Singh had said in his statement to the police.

As both trucks involved in the collision were of the same company, former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh had questioned the ‘coincidence’ a few days after the Akali leader’s death.

Regarding the magisterial inquiry ordered by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal,Amarinder had told the media at a rally in Samana: “It is a cover-up exercise and there should be a judicial inquiry by a sitting judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.”

Bir is tightlipped on the issue. “I have submitted the report to the chief secretary’s office and he has already briefed the media about it. I have nothing to tell you on this,” he said.

Contrary to Bir’s claims,Chief Secretary S C Aggarwal said he never received any such report. Sources, however, said the report was submitted during the tenure of his predecessor R I Singh.

Kanwaljit’s daughter Manpreet Kaur did not wish to comment on the matter. So did his son Jasjit Singh Bunny. “I have no idea about the inquiry report. The government has not told me anything about it,” he told The Indian Express.

Both Manpreet and Bunny said they were sure all party leaders would attend their father’s barsi at Gurdwara Nabha Sahib in Zirakhpur on Friday.

Bunny claimed that CM Badal and Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal had confirmed their participation.
