Aadhaar: Authorities rush to meet deadline

BME registration complete for only 42% population.

With the bio-metric enrolment (BME) for Aadhaar cards of only 42.4 per cent of the eligible population completed so far, authorities are rushing to meet the October 31 deadline for Howrah,Hooghly,Coochbehar,Dakshin Dinajpore,Malda,Nadia,Bankura and Kolkata districts. The deadline for Birbhum,Purba Midnapore,Purilia,Paschim Midnapore,Uttar Dinajpore and Jalpaiguri,on the other hand,is December 31.

During a video conference with the enrolment agencies on Wednesday, the state chief secretary stressed on maintaining the time schedule while also pointing out the shortage of trained staff and equipment the agencies face. “It appears they don’t have sufficient certified operators and have been unable to deploy sufficient kits,” another senior official from the directorate said.

“We have also had issues with the postal department. At least 20 per cent of the cards despatched did not reach their destination. We have taken it up with the postal department and they have assured us they will look into it,” he said on the delay with the enrolment process, which, officials in the secretariat maintain, has to be comlpeted any which way by February 2014,before the general elections.
