Aamir Khan replies to notice over abusive language in ‘Peepli’

In the counter affidavit Aamir prayed that the writ petition be dismissed with cost as the film does not violate any law.

Actor Aamir Khan and wife Kiran Rao,producers of the hit film ‘Peepli Live’ filed replies in response to a notice by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on a writ petition demanding quashing of the film’s certificate for alleged use of abusive language.

The counsel for Khan and Rao filed the reply before the division bench of Justices Devi Prasad Singh and V K Dixit.

In their counter affidavit,the husband-wife duo have prayed that the writ petition be dismissed with cost as the film,India’s official entry to this year’s Oscars,does not violate any law.

Counsel for film producer and director Prakash Jha,whose film ‘Omkaara’ too was named in the writ,also appeared before the court.

According to petitioner Ashok Pandey,the court has also asked the other parties to file their replies in the meantime.

Last month,the Allahabad High Court had directed the Mumbai Police Commissioner to serve notices to producers and directors of ‘Peepli Live’,’Omkaara’,’Gangaajal’ and ‘Bandit Queen’ over a petition alleging use of abusive language in these films.

The petitioner had sought direction to impose an immediate ban on screening of such movies stating that use of such language in popular films sends out the wrong message.

On October 12,the court had issued notices against Censor board chairperson Sharmila Tagore,’Peepli Live’ producers Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao,director Anusha Rizvi,’Gangajal’ producer and director Prakash Jha,’Omkara’ producer Kumar Mangat and director Vishal Bharadwaj,’Bandit Queen’ producer Sandeep S Bedi and director Shekhar Kapoor.

However,despite notices none of the respondents had appeared before the court after which the bench directed that the notices be sent through the Mumbai Police Commissioner.
