Aamir's girl returns in retro avtar for 'David'

As an American banker staying over in Mumbai for a while, Monica Dogra made a non-glam start to her Bollywood career in Dhobi Ghat. However she has gone through a transformation of sorts in David where she has turned retro in the 70s setting of London.
"Dhobi Ghat was mainly an art-house affair and required Monica to carry a no-make up look. There were no added frills either and she had to wear day to day costumes. However things are different in case of David. It is an ultra stylish role and since she features in that story of the film which has a London setting, there is a different Monica that audience would get to see. It is a revelation", informs a source.
This time around, she is paired opposite Neil Nitin Mukesh in the film. While Neil is enacting the part of a gangster, it is yet unknown whether Monica is playing his moll or if there a different shade to her characterization.
"What is sure though is that this time around she is getting into an out and out commercial mould", the source adds, "She has worked really hard on her appearance as she had to be convincing in the retro avtar. There was a lot that went into getting her overall attire and the look in place."
Director Bejoy Nambiar, who handpicked Monica over everyone else, had seen her work in Dhobi Ghat before finalizing her for the part.
He says, "Yes, she has gone retro in the film and is playing a very interesting character. Her story is set with Neil in the 70s. She is playing a woman who is much more progressive than other women from those times. She is shown as someone brought up in a conservative family but is instead very fiery and full on energy part. As a retro woman, she has played her part beautifully."
