Abandoned bag creates panic at Shivajinagar station

An abandoned bag created panic at Shivajinagar railway station on Tuesday. The bag was found in the waiting room of platform number 1 during a routine check by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) around noon.

A dog squad was immediately pressed into service and a sniffer dog indicated that the bag carried something suspicious. BBDS sleuths checked the bag with their bomb detection equipment which also indicated some suspicious material in the bag.

As a precautionary measure, BDDS sleuths along with Pune city police vacated the area. Senior police officers and fire brigade teams were also pressed into action.

BDDS officials took the bag to SSPMS ground around 2 pm and opened the bag by using explosives. The bag carried clothes, a mosquito net, some electric wires, an old telephone-like instrument, some iron nails and a few medicines, said officials.

Additional commissioner of police Chandrashekhar Daithankar said railway police will investigate who left the bag at the waiting room.

Meanwhile, police suspect that medicines in the bag may have prompted sniffer dogs to indicate that it contained suspicious material.
