  • National Rifle Association of India President Digvijay Singh on Thursday described India's first individual Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra and Asian gold medalist Jaspal Rana as "ungrateful" for not acknowledging the system's contribution to their success.

The NRAI President said the success of Bindra and Rana had been possible due to the system set up by the Indian shooting federation but it seems to have gone to their heads and their statements betray arrogance.

"The success of shooters like Abhinav Bindra and Jaspal Rana has been possible due to the system set up by the Indian shooting federation...If they do not acknowledge the fact then they are ungrateful... success seems to have gone to their heads," Singh told a television news channel.

Strongly reacting to the remarks of the NRAI Chairman, Asiad gold medallist Jaspal Rana said the present system could not produce champions.

"Present system cannot produce champions... no one from the federation has even bothered to find out why I am not practising," he said.

Abhinav's father A S Bindra also lashed out at the governing body, saying shooters had to spend money from their pocket to buy ammunition and practise.

He also demanded that the NRAI reveal their accounts to show how the money is spent.

Reformation has to happen - Indian Politicians have no business managing what should be professional bodiesBy: Singha | 19-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward NRAI like other organisations politicised by congress is a failure. We need to benchmark our organisations with how successful sports nations like US, Russia and china operate.
Abhinav Bindra By: Barinder Ahluwalia | 19-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward Digvijay Singh is insane. He does not know what he is talking about.
‘Abhinav Bindra, Jaspal Rana are ungrateful’By: Gurumurthy | 19-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward Enough of this bindra and our sports authorities. bindra has achieved something great - no doubt. but we in India are so boastful of our small 'individual' achievements, I think we need to focus on the communityand our attitudinal development. These successful sports persons (mainly their overzealous parents) should use thier new found popularity to help others rateher than trying to occupy media space - of course the media also has let us down to such an extent - they can't sell unldess they induslge in this kind of stories - just we had the shameful episode of media blowing up the CERN experiment that drove some one to commit suicide. Some introspection is needed for allthose involved . May be the media also needs to recruit more 'journalists' than MBAs
Abhinav BindraBy: Pran | 19-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward Bindra,Rana and other Olympians are repeating the same very sad facts about the Govt. officials. Why this present Govt. is not shunting out these good for nothing officials .
No place for Politicians.By: Srihari | 19-Sep-2008 Reply | Forward Ask the President of the so called Federation to take the honorary post and the perks that come along with this job and keep his political mouth shut. He should be praising the two champions instead of lashing out at them and criticising them in public. These two shooters have brought more laurels than what Mr. President of Rifle federation have brought to his post all his life.
