Abohar patients at great risk as only blood bank shuts down

Residents of Abohar sub-tehsil face a great risk if they fall ill: they might not get blood on time if a transfusion is needed.

Residents of Abohar sub-tehsil face a great risk if they fall ill: they might not get blood on time if a transfusion is needed. Reason: the only blood bank in this area, which was housed in the Abohar Civil Hospital, has been closed down as its licence has not been renewed. Only two days ago,a pregnant woman, who was anaemic, died at the hospital because she could not get blood in time.

The bank is also unlikely to reopen soon as its licence cannot be renewed until it buys an Elisa reader (for tests of HIV,Hepatitis B and C),a blood bag agitator (to stop clotting of blood),a tube sealer and a thermograph refrigerator to maintain the temperature of blood samples. The blood bank had been running without this necessary equipment and the licensing authority in Chandigarh had to reject its renewal application.

The equipment will cost more than Rs 5 lakh. Civil Surgeon,Ferozepur,Dr K.J.S Kakkar confirmed that there were serious shortcomings at the hospital,“We have informed Punjab Health Systems Corporation. Because they are necessary components and without them the blood bank cannot run. The licensing authority had rejected the application in May,2010 yet the blood bank continued running. Our drug inspector finally closed it around 10 days ago.”

Till the time the blood bank reopens with proper equipment, patients will have to get blood units from Fazilka Civil Hospital which is 32 km away. For serious patients, such a delay can be life threatening. Quick revival of the blood bank is also necessary because Abohar Civil Hospital serves accident victims from the main highway that also runs through Rajasthan and Haryana.
