The six accused, who were arrested for allegedly kidnapping 10-year-old Shivam Kadam in Vile Parle Friday, had tried to abduct the boy a day earlier, but had to abort their plan, police said.
The police said accused were lying in wait outside Shivam's house Thursday afternoon when domestic help, Seema Dhadvey, brought him out on some pretext. Seema is one of the arrested accused.
"When Seema came out with Shivam, she saw three residents of the building outside the gate. Realising that they would recognise her, she signalled to the other accused to cancel the plan," said DCP Namdev Chavan, Zone 8.
Police have impounded Tata Indigo used in the crime and found a dagger under back seat. The accused, after abducting Shivam in a Mahindra Xylo, had moved him into the Indigo.
"The accused may have had more sinister intentions because Shivam knew one of them and would have identified her after being released," said an officer.
The accused told police that knife was only meant to scare anyone who tried to interfere. "However, when we asked them where they planned to confine Shivam, they seemed to have no answer. They claimed that they would have kept moving and had planned to abandon him if they did not get the ransom the same day," the officer said.
