A doctor working with a reputed private hospital in Delhi committed suicide in his hometown Ranchi, police said on Tuesday. Family members of Dr Amit Anand said he was under stress due to a strained relationship with his wife and her family.
The body of Anand, in his early thirties, was found on Monday morning in the bedroom of his Ashok Ashram home. “The previous night, he had gone out for dinner. After he returned, he went to bed. In the morning when the door did not open, we were worried. We broke open the door to find his body hanging from the bar of a window,” said Anand’s father Jata Shanker Jha, Central Excise and Customs Superintendent.
The police have registered a case of unnatural death. “So far nobody has come forward contesting our understanding that Anand committed suicide,” said Ranchi SP (City) S Thakur. No suicide note has been found.
Anand, who did his MBBS from Maulana Azad Medical College in Delhi, married Aparna Pathak, also an MBBS, in 2006. The relationship later turned sour and Aparna filed a case alleging that Anand and his family had demanded dowry. He was later arrested. After he came out of jail on bail, Anand returned to Ranchi. His petition seeking divorce was slated to come up for hearing on October 22.
Aparna was not available for comment. Shiv Shanker Jha, Anand’s brother, said: “Apart from facing ridicule in public for long, he was under stress due to the estranged relationship with his wife.”
