Mystery shrouds the death of an Assistant Commissioner of the Delhi Police whose body was found on a railway track in Palwal (Haryana) on Sunday. While the police said it appeared to be an accident, according to sources the ACP had been depressed for the last few months because of work pressure and could have committed suicide.
ACP Radhey Shyam Sharma, aged around 60, was to retire on December 31 and had been on leave. He reportedly went missing from his house in Sector 4, RK Puram, on November 27. A report in this regard was filed on Sunday morning at the RK Puram police station.
The Government Railway Police (GRP), Palwal, informed the Delhi Police after spotting the body. A team was rushed to the spot along with family members. “Investigations are on. We have not found any eyewitness till now,” said a GRP officer. The police have not recovered any suicide note.
According to the police, the ACP left his house on November 27 around 2.30 pm in a taxi, telling his wife and children that he was going to Palwal to meet his relatives. When he did not return home even on Saturday, and his phone not working either, his son, Ajay, lodged a report with the police. The ACP had left his I-card at home.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S N Srivastava, however, denied any pressure at work. “He was on leave. He had earlier taken a month’s leave and then got it extended. Every policeman has to do a lot of work,” he said.
On a visit to Sharma’s house in RK Puram, the Newsline team found it locked, as the family had gone to their native village for his last rites. Sharma is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
