Having renamed its Mullanpur Township adjoining PGIMER as “New Chandigarh”,the Punjab government has now decided to extend the project and asked the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) to acquire more land and said, like Chandigarh,it should be planned on sectoral grid system.

Sources said presiding over a meeting of the Punjab Urban Development Authority recently,Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was told by officers that already 400 acres of land had been acquired for the Mullanpur project where Eco City phase I was coming up. GMADA had already made allotments and another 325 acres of land was under acquisition where Eco City phase II would come up. Sukhbir then directed the officers that GAMADA should acquire more land so that this proposed city could be extended. Also, the officers were told that sectors would be carved out in Mullanpur and they would be,like Chandigarh,on the same sectoral grid pattern.

The officers were told to acquire land for constructing two 200-foot wide roads (eight-lane road). While one road will connect Mullanpur,Mohali and Kharar and touch NH 21,22,64 and will link the proposed road to Mohali International Airport. The other road will be from Mullanpur to Chandigarh straight from Sector 25 and 38 diving road.

Sukhbir also recently okayed the extension plan of Mullanpur, paving the way for developing this area as a magnet for futuristic development with state-of-the-art facilities. He said that the road grid of the Mullanpur city had to be in total synchronisation with master plan and road network should be planned keeping in view the pressure of development for the next 50 years.

Cautioning about mushrooming of unauthorised or non-sanctioned colonies in the Mullanpur planned area,Sukhbir said that it was imperative for the authorities to check the growth of unauthorised construction with a stern hand. No builder should be allowed to start construction before getting his plan sanctioned from the authorities and it was for GMADA to ensure that every colony should provide world-class road infrastructure besides underground water and sewerage network. He said that norms for checking facilities should be strictly adhered to while monitoring the work of private colonies.

Asking GMADA to explore the possibility of setting up a new township near Zirakpur and Derabassi,he said that GMADA had to plan for challenges of future to check the mushrooming of unauthorised colonies.

The Punjab Cricket Association has bought land in Mullanpur and plans to build a stadium there.
