Cracking the whip on distribution of bogus ration cards, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday asked the state government to take action against officers involved in the malpractice.
A Division Bench of Justice Ranjana Desai and Justice R G Ketkar was hearing a public interest litigation filed by one Jayprakash Unecha who had moved the High Court last year alleging that several bogus ration cards were issued in Pune.
The state government informed the court that it has issued an order directing the Pune Collector to conduct an inquiry into the allegations and submit a report immediately. The government has also issued a circular directing a similar inquiry to be conducted in districts across the state, public prosecutor PA Pol told the court. Following the submission on behalf of the state government, the court disposed of the petition and directed the government to take expeditious action.
The Bombay High Court asked the state government to ensure inquiry into bogus ration cards scam is completed soon and action is taken against errant officials.
Unecha had cited examples of Gulabchand Danji and Babulal Sharma, both Pune residents, who were in possession of bogus ration cards and running fair price shops. Last month, the court had penalised Unecha for suppressing the fact that Danji was his father-in-law and asked him to pay Rs 50,000 as fine. The court took suo-motu action in the PIL.
