Action against Bhadohi jail staff for torturing inmates

An official inquiry has indicted five employees two deputy jailors and three wardens of Gyanpur jail in Sant Ravidas Nagar.

An official inquiry has indicted five employees two deputy jailors and three wardens of Gyanpur jail in Sant Ravidas Nagar (Bhadohi) for torturing three undertrials in prison premises last week. The incident was exposed by a photographer who took pictures from a nearby building.

V K Jain,Deputy Inspector General of Prisons at Allahabad, who conducted the inquiry, has recommended suspension of the wardens and disciplinary action against the jailors.

Although the photograph showed only one man hung from his feet and being beaten with a stick, the jail staff had actually tortured three undertrials, identified as Raj Kumar,Raj Bahadur and Suraj.

However, the report says the date and time of the incident are yet to be confirmed.

Yogesh Shukla,Additional IG at the prison headquarters here, said the deputy jailors were Dhirendra Kumar Singh and Mukesh Katiyar and the wardens were Kamla Singh,Bharat Singh and Vinod Kumar Dubey.

He said the inquiry report was being sent to the Home Secretary for necessary action. The wardens have already been suspended.

Jain said the deputy jailors and wardens admitted that they had beaten up inmates on getting to know that they were planning an escape. However, they failed to produce evidence to corroborate their allegation.
