Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan after the CPM Politburo meeting in New Delhi on Sunday.
Some members of the CPM Politburo are learnt to have taken a view that disciplinary action should be taken against Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan who has been demanding that Pinarayi Vijayan step down as state secretary. However, the top leadership at the two-day meeting could not arrive at a decision after serious differences erupted among members over punishing the veteran leader alone. The Politburo then decided to convene an emergency meeting of the Central Committee next weekend to end the stalemate.

It is learnt that the Politburo was divided on the SNC Lavalin case, in which Vijayan is a co-accused, with some members arguing that the party should reexamine its stand. CPM general secretary Prakash Karat’s suggestion that action should be taken against VS for defying the party line met with stiff resistance from some members who argued that he should not be singled out. At least four members — including Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Sitaram Yechury and M K Pandhe — opposed Karat’s suggestion.

The party’s Kerala committee had earlier held that the Chief Minister was responsible for the party’s rout in the Lok Sabha elections and several members had been seeking action against him.

Sources said that Karat’s view was that Vijayan should not step down, as the party has already taken a stand that the case was politically motivated. Achuthanandan, however, refused to budge and stuck to his demand that Vijayan should be removed from the post of state secretary.

The Central Committee will now look into the “proposals” put forward by the Politburo and take a decision on mainly two questions — whether to take disciplinary action against the Chief Minister, and should there be a re-think on the stand taken in the Lavalin case and if so, whether Vijayan should step down.

The Politburo discussed the “organisational issues related to the Kerala state unit of the party (and) decided to convene a meeting of the Central Committee on July 11-12 to consider the proposals of the Politburo regarding the party affairs in Kerala,” a statement at the end of the two-day meeting said.

It is learnt that the proposals include action against some senior members from Kerala for indulging in factionalism, as well as changes in the state committee and secretariat.

The Politburo’s decision to leave the matter to the Central Committee is an indication that the party was bracing for some tough decisions to finally end the factional feud in Kerala. It is very rare for the Politburo to fail to arrive at a decision as it can go for a vote if there are serious differences. In 1996, when the Politburo was divided on the issue of making Jyoti Basu the Prime Minister, it had referred the matter to the Central Committee.

Karat should consider public opinionBy: P.R .GOPAL | 06-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward I dont understand why Mr. Prakash Karat is so keen to protect Pinarayi who has been charge sheeted by the CBI.He has reacted in favour of Pinarayi much before checking the facts and records. This will clearly give wrong indications as some section of the media is already accusing that some politburo members are beneficiaries of the SNC Lavlin deal. Pinarayi should be removed from state secretary post and politburo and Achuthanandan should continue as Chief minister. This is the majority opinion amoung people of Kerala. CPM should not compromise on corruption issues.Party discipline is only an internal matter of the party comiittees. General Public has nothing much concerned about it. What they require is good corruption free administration. Hope the central committe will act wisely.
Vijayan Should Step DownBy: A P | 06-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Vijayan should step down and face the corruption charges against him and he has spoiled the partyi bet in few years time there wont be any communist, if it continues to go at the same rate.
WHY KARAT TAKES SO MUCH PAIN TO PROTECT VIJAYAN ?By: Aniyan | 06-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward How Karat, the Secretary of CPM is sure that Vijayan is not guilty? Why he takes so much of pain to protect Vijayan ? Why he has a deaf ear with Achuthanandan, who is sure that Vijayan is guilty? Disciplinary action against Achuthanandan is different and his stand on the SNC Lavlin case involving vijayan with hundreds of crores rupees kickback. Where has the money gone? How much was the transfer amount which Vijayan did from Kerala to Central Leadership to a Bank in North India, according to CBI's finding. Yes.... Karat knows the inquiry is likely to prove CPM central leadership active involvement in the case and receiving major share of over 132 crores from Vijayan, for party expansion and growth. So, it is natural for Karat to reject any inquiry against Vijayan. Karat has already called Achuthanandan to his office after the Politbureau and advised him to desist from the allegation in the interest of Party, which VS rejected outrightly. Keep it up VS.
