Acts of bravery get recognition

Several acts of bravery were recognised at the Godfrey Phillips Bravery Awards at the Trident Hotel on Thursday.

Several acts of bravery were recognised at the Godfrey Phillips Bravery Awards at the Trident Hotel on Thursday. Vice Admiral Sanjeev Bhasin,Western Naval Command,presented the recipients a cash prize and certificate of merit.

Yashoda Palan (65) from Mumbai was presented the ‘Mind of Steel’ Award,who in spite of suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis since the age of seven has been writing poetry,short stories and fiction. She also attended school and acquired a Bachelors degree in sociology and psychology.  

The Silver Award for physical bravery included a fire station officer,Bosco Ferraro from Goa,who fought a raging bull attacking school students in Vasco; Balkrishna Pathak for saving a travelling ticket examiner from being run over by a train at the Durg station in Chattisgarh. A special award was given to Uddesh Ramnathkar,a class five student,for his effort to save two boys from drowning .

The Gold Award for social acts of courage was given to Haribol self-help group for its efforts in empowering women in a remote Chattisgarh village by successfully turning traditional herbal medicinal knowledge into a thriving business.

The Jivhala Society for the Mentally Handicapped received the silver award. The bronze was given to Swift wash,a laundry in Goa,which provides a new lease of life to the victims of human trafficking.
